Caffeine-Free Herbal Tea Recommendations from Sherry at YAO Clinic

I missed most of Daniel’s tea tasting this morning with our staff but decided to go another route with my tea selection anyway. I was feeling a bit “herbal” today, and I chose Hibiscus… and Chrysanthemum. And…hibiscus ACTUALLY has 2 times the antioxidants than Matcha tea does. Wow!

I love both of these teas because they taste great served both hot to warm and also as an iced tea. They are also super forgiving as far as the steep times. No need to stand over your cup waiting, watching the time, worrying it might go bitter. These are both caffeine free teas as they are, but are wonderful teas to mix with perhaps a black tea, if you are looking for that caffeine high.

TEA RECIPE

Amount: 2 TBS = 2.5/3 grams
Temp: Boiling, around 202 degrees Fahrenheit is good.
How long: Anywhere from 3-5 minutes depending on how strong you like your liquid refreshment! I have even steeped them for up to 7 minutes and gotten just a really nice, rich, strong cup of tea. Love!

FLAVORS PROFILE

HIBISCUS:

Sweet yet tart, cranberry like.

CHRYSANTHEMUM:

Natural, mildly sweet, slight hebal-honey flavor.

LIQUORS:

HIBISCUS:
OMG! It’s such a gorgeous red/pink. Ruby red.

CHRYSANTHEMUM:
Pale, golden yellow.

    NUMBER OF STEEPINGS:

HIBISCUS:

I would go to two-possibly 3 but the second and 3rd steep will be much weaker.

CHRYSANTHEMUM:

For Chrysanthemum, you can re-steep this one all day. It takes on a richer herbal flavor the longer it steeps and will have a more subtle flavor the more times you refill the teapot with hot water.

SHERRY’S SPECIAL – CHRYSANTHEMUM/HIBISCUS BLEND
Today, I actually steeped my Hibiscus and Chrysanthemum flowers together to make a beautiful, delicious fruity and mellow tea. 🙂 I love it just as is but a sweetener could be added if you prefer a little more sweeter flavor.

BENEFICIAL PROPERTIES
Both of these teas are said to have “cooling” properties and are both RICH inantioxidants and vitamins. All great for our skin! Ascorbic Acid, Carotene, B1, B3, and even protein to name a few.

Hibiscus Tea can affect estrogen levels which means that it has an effect of both pregnancy and fertility. If you are trying to become pregnant or are pregnant, you should probably avoid hibiscus in your diet. It also lowers blood pressure which can be harmful if you already suffer from low blood pressure. But these are questions that actually can be discussed directly with our very own Dr. Daniel.
